I need to go home...

Heard earlier today as I was forced to share a ride with a woman apparently from Utah, constantly talking to the driver as we drove around in Maine...
"So yeah, I really think that Utah is a rising state, we got all kinds of events"
and...
(to driver) "I don't see any basements, don't you have any basements here in Maine?"
Driver: "We do, but they're usually under the houses"
Utah Lady: "Oh, that's why I haven't seen any!"

I need to go back home...

Yeah, that driver was clueless. -"... usually under the houses"?!

When have you ever see a basement on top of a house? :-P

Not that some Australians aren't dopey, but, damn, I am very glad that my ancestors chose to come here instead of the US.

Welcome to Maine! It's leafpeeper season, and the visiting southerners and the locals can barely communicate, especially when both sides have thick accents native to their states. Utah woman sounds leafpeepery to me.

Chris - Yep and this just reinforces what I always thought - NEVER EVER go to Utah!

BiJ - Indeed a moran!

Martin - It does make me wonder how they build their basements in Utah...

Aimless - Well, since Australia was founded by rapists and thieves, it does imply some cunningness and intelligence (although they did get caught) ;)

Sarah - I found it to be quite pleasant indeed in Maine, and I guess I should be grateful as long as I don't have to go to Utah!

True, if they got caught they probably weren't master criminals.

Ironically, most people are now proud of any convict ancestry they may have. I'm not sure what that says about us... but at least I probably don't have any convict ancestors (or at least, none that the family admits to).

in the southern part of the States basements aren't true basements but walk- out basements. they aren't completely underground but one side opens to the outside. I'm from the midewest where tornadoes happen regularly and even apartments have underground basements. but when i moved to the south, basements were optional and often of the walkout variety. so you can see them from outside. I've been in the south for 15 years and still can't get used to it. also they don't build sidewalks here in the south(Georgia) either. weird.
