I think that most people saw the news on the Japanese female soccer team winning the world cup the other day after a quite tense second half against the US team, ending up with a decision through penalty kicks. I was trying to sleep through this as I still felt a bit bitter about the Japanese team beating the Swedish team a few days earlier, but the baby had brought up Mrs. Sunshine and I could follow the game through her enthusiastic cheering and cursing (as a former "almost made it pro" tennis player she really gets into watching sports...).
In any case, I think this type of good news was just what Japan needed with the aftermath of the quake and the ongoing power saving propaganda at the moment. Never mind that most people didn't know that the female soccer world cup was ongoing until Japan made it to the semi-finals.
As the team returned home the other day, they received a heroes welcoming with media, fans all over the place at the airport (again, never mind that when they left basically the only ones to see them off was their families, if that even).
Yesterday they participated in one of the morning news shows we usually have on in the mornings in the Salaryman household ("Mezamashi tv" for those familiar with Japanese morning shows). The whole team was in the studio and answered pre-recorded questions from fans. My favorite question came from a little girl who asked the team "Do you have boyfriends and do guys like girls who play soccer?". To put it all in a frame of reference, the team looks something like this...

...so yeah, you can judge for yourself, but to me at least half the team looks pretty butch (hey, that's perfectly fine though)... But the funny thing was the reaction when the team heard the question, there were quite a few grins that seemed to say "if that little girl only knew". Unfortunately Baby Sunshine distracted me so I missed how they handled the question. In Japan, female homosexuality is not something that is very openly talked about and being open about it would make any advertisement deals more difficult...

Hi Salaryman! Been stalking your site for a while. This caught my attention because at work today, we were talking about the Japanese girls soccer team and how they..well, as one of the guys calls it, "look like they were Lebanese." We can't say lesbian because of some kind of work sexual harassment training we had...go figure. It's a shame that being athletic and "butch" usually go hand in hand. Not always but usually, in my opinion.

I just saw them doing the 'Algorithm Taisou' on YouTube, and I was thinking that 'oh my. They are as opposite as Nadeshiko can become!' I don't think they are lesbians at all, but I just think they are boys.
I agree with Chris here...that goalkeepr is without any question a MAN....dude she/he doesn´t even have recognisable breasts!
Chris - Yep, that goalie must be a dude! Looks like a dude and built like a dude. Definitely the most butch one in the team and that's saying something!
April - Hey there April, welcome around and thanks for commenting! They look very much "lebanese" but isn't soccer really a sport where there's a lot of lesbians in? None of the other Japanese women's teams in other sports I've seen look as butch as the soccer team!
BiJ - Yep, I hate the sport too to be honest. Too slow and dull, ice hockey is much more preferrable!
AkiraTaiga - They've been doing the rounds of the Japanese variety tv shows now. They seem like a nice bunch, but they do seem like boys - 20-something old boys ;)

Ah, it's a relief to say it loud. My gaydar went off with alarums and sirens every time the team was on TV. They're from the Isle of Lesbos. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
