I'm not sure this really makes sense...?

Now in the downtime between Christmas and New Year's I thought I could bring up a funny sign that I came across in a supermarket a few days ago. The sign is the one you see in the picture and was put up in the bathroom of a supermarket I for some odd reason was frequenting.

The sign says "For crime prevention purposes, the staff will also use these toilets and we ask for your cooperation". Now, I'm not sure if it's only me, but I fail to see how it would help against crime that their cashiers take a dump in the toilet with the regular customers? Maybe they do it with an open door or something?

I kinda felt a bit disappointed that I didn't see any of the staff in the bathroom, but on the other hand no crimes occurred either during this time so maybe there just wasn't any need?

It's possible some staff have been stealing and using the staff restroom as the place to stuff things into their bags, as its in a backroom and possibly no cameras around.

Or conversely they think the idea of possibly coming across a staff member in the toilet will discourage people from stuffing things into their bags also?

Your continuing coverage of the Japanese toilet scene is worthy of some kind of award, probably one which makes the sound of flushing water when you touch it.

Anyway, I always thought the reason for this setup is lack of space for staff toilets, but maybe they just have problems with cottaging.

さらまり - Well, the basic idea probably is like you say, but I have difficulties seeing that it would actually wokr in any case...

Penguin - Thank you and it's about time the effort I've spent researching the toilet scene gets recognized! When my revolution comes I will remember that you recongized this!

Perhaps it is supposed to just confuse potential criminals into wondering WTF is going on?

Is there a subtle unique cultural thing going on, which non Japanese find completely baffling? Ask the wifey?

Japanese toilets are an endlessly fascinating (in a bizarre way) subject! It's is really just amazing what kinds of strange things go on in there. And we are lucky that you are here to report from the 'inside'.

Aimless - I actually don't think there's any cultural things coming at play here and I think that the Penguin is correct, a lack of staff toilets made them make this "crime prevention" deal up as an excuse...

I will continue my investigation into Japanese toilets, trust me on that!
