I think generally there are two things that can seriously put a dent in a man's self-esteem and really make one doubt one's own masculinity. I don't really think I need to even mention these two things since they should be obvious to everyone, but they are:Not being able to perform in bed
Not being able to properly light a barbecue fire
As you understand, I experienced the humiliation of failing at one of the above...
Since we now have a little garden with the Salaryman family house, I decided to purchase an outdoor grill to have a little western style barbecue, just the three of us in the family (Baby Sunshine is still hogging all the boob so her interest was limited). Despite an hour of attempts, plenty of coal, obscene amounts of highly flamable gel/liquid and paper I had to concede failure... I had failed at lighting the barbecue grill...s
I think that this is much much worse than not being able to perform in bed since there are always other circumstances that you can blame and eventually you are sure to make a glorious comeback, but this? Not being able to light a fire with all the necessary equipment? I'm not sure if I can reclaim my manliness after this... One way would be to buy an electric grill and pretend like that's "much better", but I would know, deep inside, that it's just a lie...

Do they not have propane grill over in your neck of the woods? Mind I'm in the land of bbq charde flesh known as Kansas City.
I've never tried to light a gas BBQ, but the old style wood burning ones are no problem.
I guess you didn't read the instructions? Cuz real men don't need to read them.
Blame the defective bbq, then "take it back to the shop to get one that works" (by yourself of course), ie go ask an expert what the hell went wrong. Then successfully demonstrate how it is done on a bbq "which works properly".
You have always been half a man for me. I hope your wife doesn´t think the same?
Anonymous - Well, maybe I should've gotten a propane to start with, but in my foolishness I thought I was man enough to grill with charcoal...
Aimless - Obviously I threw away the instructions, any man who needs "instructions" on how to light a fire with access to lighter fluid, lighters, paper and charcoal doesn't deserve to use any BBQ grill...
Martin - Well, at this point, it seems like I cannot claim to be more than half a man...
If you're lighting a wood fire, if in doubt, add more accelerant. Then stand way back.
