"Awesome"

Setting: Mr and Mrs. Salaryman are entering a small clothes shop in a store in Hawaii, no one in the store but us and the young store girl.

Store Girl: Hi guys, just let me know if I can help you with anything, how are you doing today?

Mr. Salaryman: We're doing fine, thanks

Store Girl: Awesome!!!

Mr. Salaryman: (thinking to himself, restraining himself to not say it out loud) What the f**k is wrong with you people?!

We can't help it - we're American, over-the-top enthusiasm and optimism is our national character. The Czechs on the other hand, where I've spent the majority of my year, have a phrase "if you're pessimistic, you're a realist with experience." Btw, Mr. Salaryman, your blog is awesome!

In defense of Hawaii, I wanna suggest she might be from California?

Hey mr Salaryman. You are a very cool guy. I´m not surprised that the clerc found you awesome.

Ok, for the record, this is the deal:

Hawaii: "Awesome!"
Cali: "Totally Awasome!"
Japan: "E Rashe Masae" (ear splitting volume)

So, which one do you prefer, dude?

I think you might be onto something there Chris, now that you mention it I don't think she greated us with an "Aloha" like everyone else.

Karen - Yeah, I'm more dispositioned to the Czech way of thinking it seems like ;)

Me - Well, the politeness of the Japanese can be a bit too much sometimes, but I do have issues with unwarranted extreme enthusiasm...
