Getting Married in Japan Epilogue – The Wedding Night

With the start-up of the "buying a house" series, I also thought that I should add a little epilogue to this immensely popular series of posts on the subject you probably are most interested in; the wedding night...

Our wedding was booked several months in advance at the hotel and included in all the fees was also one night’s stay at a wedding suite so we wouldn’t have to worry about going back home on our wedding night. Basically our wedding night after the reception was over turned out something like this:

  1. When checking into our room after the ceremony, we realize that the wedding suite that had been booked 3 months before had two separate small beds!!!

  2. After the wedding, we had booked in massage for both of us at the hotel salon and Mrs. Sunshine-Salaryman had to tell the therapist "just let him sleep" when I fell asleep during the massage and started snoring loudly and flailing my arms and legs, making her job quite difficult...
  3. Since we hardly had the time to eat anything during the actual reception we realized how roaring hungry we were at around 11pm and went down to the convenience store in the hotel and pigged out on fried chicken, rice balls and other delicious convenience store fare!
  4. Then we curled up in one of the small beds and snuggled the night away...

Maby they figured that you guys already spent some nights together and preferred to sleep separetly?
Perhaps you could check such details on your next marriage.

Mrs SunSal. might actually be happy to not have to deal with the flailing husband during the wedding night?

Nothing says romance than having to sleep in a single bed.
Makes you feel like you are in college, don't you think? :D

The English are probably to blame for this state of affairs too.

I trust you both laid back and thought of Japan.

As an Englishman I take exception at your comment Mr ThePenguin.

That said, my own wedding night was largely spent in peaceful sleep to recover from the emotions and exertions of the day.

Still, if you are yet unmarried it could be useful to know that a Japanese bridal suite is designed for celibacy. A great contrast with the easy availability of Love Hotels!

How to explain Japan's miserable birth rate?

Martin - We did get a member's card to their "wedding club" so maybe we get points; 5th wedding free or something

Lina - Yep, but on the wedding night you don't really want to feel like you're in college... But we did fit in there

Penguin - Well, that would probably mostly annoy her, but I'm sure that her mother gave her some wise advice on how to just shut up and put up with it a couple of times a week

RMilner - Yep, we did sleep quite soundly but I did manage to sneak in a little before that during the massage

Sounds like great customer service there - just hitched=separate beds! I thought that was for when you've been married for a few years. Some Japanese hotel beds are tiny, lucky one of you didn't fall off.

How ironic that you were reduced to foraging for conbini food late at night after the expensive reception.

That may be a sign that the massage was very relaxing. Or excess toasting with sake?

@RMilner: if it's any help, I may be an escapee from Whipsnade Zoo but I married Mrs. Penguin in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.
