Two Men working closely together! (Golden Week interlude)

Ok, you can see this as a short interlude before I charge up for the next real post. It's now again the "Golden Week" here in Japan but after having this blog for 4 years now, I'm running out of entertaining puns on that week, so instead I'll go for something completely different.

This commercial in many forms (but always with the basic concept of two guys, one in blue and one in red doing physical activities together and helping each other out with the magnificent catchcopy "FIGHT!" or "Faito!" as it becomes in Japanese. The commercial is for energy drink "Lipovitan D", one of the strongest and most long lived brands of energy drinks here in Japan.

Everytime I see this commercial I get into a minor argument with Mrs. Sunshine (a jokingly argument mind you) as I claim that the concept and commercials are explicitly gay and that the pair in the commercials must be meant to be gay (not the actors, they very well could be for all I know though) while she doesn't really see things as I see them.

I think it's obvious, you agree with me, right? I bet that energy drink gives them the energy to go at it all night long after a hard climb!

Gay, 'not that there's anything wrong with that'. Thought the same myself previous to your post, and I have addressed it on my blog: http://hanlonsrzr.blogspot.com/2011/01/man-up.html

I got the Gay vibe thingy the first time I saw it and...well..They are being pretty clear about it. I assumed everyone thought it was a Gay friendly brand or something??

I think this old ad looks more gay than the new one. As long as they look tanned and macho, i like :P

It must be short shorts.

By the way, I have heard of Golden Week a lot, but don't really know what it is about. What holiday is it?

No question- they certainly aren't 'metrosexual'

Mr. S - Of course, nothing wrong with it, but it really strikes me as quite queer. Those guys (?) you feature on your post is in a different league though...

Chris - Exactly, if they ran that in the US I'm pretty sure it would be perceived as a gay-friendly product, right?

Eva - Actually, yeah, I didn't realize until I rewatched it now... Must be mid 90's or something? Macho indeed!

Sam P - Yeah, the shorts do play in there, absolutely! Sorry for me being lazy, but a bit of a chore to go through golden week, but if you check my posts earlier years around the same time you can find more explanation there :)

Me - Yep, this is straight up manly men!

As these commercial have been running for nearly 30 years now, I think there's a lot of projection going on here. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

It might be better to, in the future, clarify from start if you mean Gay in the good way or in the bad way.
